With the city of Minneapolis banning the use of conversion therapy on minors, Rochester needs to follow suit.
Furthermore, Mayo Clinic ought to speak out and take an official stance against the abusive practice of conversion therapy.In doing my own research, I was unable to find any information from Mayo about their stance on the issue.
Meanwhile, organizations such as the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers, and even the U.N., among others, have condemned the practice of conversion therapy.
In a statement on their website, Mayo states that they “provide care in a welcoming, respectful and culturally competent manner that is inclusive to patients of all sexual orientations and/or gender identities and expressions. Mayo Clinic seeks to ensure that care provided to patients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) is consistent with Mayo values of respect, integrity, compassion and healing.”
In conversion therapy, there is no respect for an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity. There is not integrity in the horrific practice of so-called conversion “therapy.” There is no compassion for a person in conversion therapy, and there is no healing in it. There is only abuse and torture. The real healing would be in protecting our youth from the practice by banning conversion therapy entirely.
If Mayo really wants to live up to their values, they need to use the power they wield to help get conversion therapy banned in the city of Rochester.
