Special Session Update
Anti-marriage amendment dragged into special session budget battle

OutFront Minnesota has learned today that there is a strong possibility that the proposed constitutional amendment to prohibit any form of legal status for same-sex couples and their families (including, but not limited to, marriage) may be discussed on the floor of the Minnesota Senate on Thursday, June 30. In the
past, the amendment has not had a lot of traction in Senate committees, but its proponents continue to push for a floor vote in the Senate to send the amendment to Minnesota voters in 2006. It is critical that, once again, senators hear from fair-minded Minnesotans who are appalled at this effort to give discrimination legitimacy by cloaking it in the language of 'letting the people vote.'

ONE MORE TIME - please act today! Please contact your state senator to express your opposition to the amendment (SF 22) and ask your senator to oppose the constitutional amendment to bar all marriage, civil unions and all other forms of legal recognition for same-sex couples.

Don't know who your senator is, or how to contact him or her? Click here to
identify your senate district with OutFront's district finder, and here if you know your senator, but need the contact information.

Remember:

  • This proposed constitutional amendment will not pave any highways,
provide any health care, educate any students, or benefit a single
Minnesotan in any way - but it will harm Minnesota families, including
    families with children.
  • Submitting a measure to popular vote that would withhold rights from a minority is not an act of democracy; it is an abuse of the democratic
process that constitutions were written to prevent.
  • Minnesota borders a nation whose parliament just this week voted
to legalize marriage equality for same-sex couples, based in part on the
same principles of equality Americans cherish, and in part on the fact
that experience shows that doing so harms nobody.

Report from Twin Cities Pride

Twin Cities Pride 2005 took place on June 24th & 25th, and OutFront Minnesota was there to organize, energize, and, well, socialize.  What a treat it was to spend time with so many happy GLBT and allied folks!  As our popular button said, "Better Gay than Grumpy!"

Thousands of people stopped by the OutFront Minnesota Pride Pavilion to participate in our marble poll (results coming soon!), pick up some cool buttons, and most important of all, sign postcards to their legislators asking them to put a stop to the proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

OutFront Minnesota would like to extend a huge thanks to:

  • Dunn Bros of Loring Park for sponsoring our GLBTA Community Coffeehouse at Pride
  • Kowalski's, Lunds, and Bruegger's for donating refreshments for those fabulous parade canvass volunteers on Sunday morning
  • And of course all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make our outreach at Twin Cities Pride a huge success.

You can now get those cool buttons and our sporty green GET OUT t-shirts on our website.  Go to https://www.outfront.org/members/order.html to place your order today.

If you're in greater Minnesota, don't worry--the buttons and shirts will be coming your way soon.  Here's where we'll be in the next few months:

  • Rochester Pride
    July 16-17
  • Soul Essence - The Twin Cities GLBT African-American Pride
    August 13-14
  • Duluth-Superior Pride
