Anti-Marriage Amendment
Reintroduced in Minnesota Senate
On
Monday, June 5, the constitutional amendment to bar all
legal recognition of same-sex couples was reintroduced
in the Senate. Senator Michele Bachmann (R-Stillwater)
and Senator Mady Reiter (R-Shorview) reintroduced the
constitutional amendment to ensure that it will be
included in special session negotiations. At the end of
May, two constitutional bans on marriage, civil unions,
and domestic partnerships for same-sex couples were
introduced in the Minnesota House (HF 8 and HF 12).
Senate File (SF) 22 contains identical language. As the
House, Senate, and the Governor work out their
differences about health care, education and the budget,
the supporters of these bills will be working to keep
discussions of an anti-marriage amendment at the
negotiations table. Once again, it is imperative that
Minnesotans who are opposed to discrimination and
believe that the Constitution should never be used to
enshrine second-class status for GLBT people or anyone
else speak out against the anti-marriage amendment.
Take
Action:
-
Call or e-mail the Senator who represents you. Tell
them, "Please oppose the constitutional amendment
to ban civil unions, marriage, and all other forms
of legal protection for same-sex couples. This
amendment mandates discrimination for some of
Minnesota families and it distracts legislators from
reaching resolution on pressing issues that affect
the quality of life for all of our state's
families." Find your legislators and their
contact information at
http://www.outfront.org/action/tools.html.
-
Write a letter to the editor to your local paper.
Volunteers Needed at Pride
OutFront Minnesota is in need of more volunteers for our
Pride Political Action effort this year. We all know how
many people attend the parade, and OutFront Minnesota
wants to ask as many as we possibly can to sign a
postcard that we will send to their state legislators.
After the last three years at the Capitol, we should all
be feeling a sense of urgency with regard to GLBT
issues, even in this non-election year. See
legislative news above... So, grab a bunch of
your friends and meet with other GLBT organizers and
activists on Sunday morning, June 26th, at 9am in the
OutFront Minnesota Pride Pavilion in Loring Park. We'll
have some bagels, juice and coffee. Monica Meyer, our
Public Policy Director, will conduct a quick training,
and then we'll be grouped into teams and assigned an
area of the parade route to canvass. Everybody should be
done by noon, if not earlier.
We
also need people to help us staff Pride Information
Booths on both days of the festival. Volunteering for
this assignment gets you a Pride T-shirt, food tickets
and an invitation to the big Pride Volunteer
Appreciation party in July. Shifts are four hours long,
and OutFront Minnesota volunteers will continue our
political action efforts at these booths, so it's a
great opportunity for our organization.
We
need more volunteers for Sunday afternoon at our tent as
well. Tent volunteers can help us distribute our Pride
bags, have attendees sign postcards to their legislators
or help us at the coffee bar.
Sign-up by emailing OutFront's Volunteer
Coordinator, Connie Kauppi, at
volunteer@outfront.org or fill out a volunteer
application online.
Indicate your interest on the form.

When gay British playwright Joe Orton burst onto the
scene in 1964 with his subversive, stylish comedy,
audiences were shocked, thrilled and sometimes appalled.
The play, with its unconventional subject matter,
explicit sexual themes and brilliant humor, launched
Orton’s meteoric rise, establishing him as one of the
twentieth century’s most significant writers of dark and
cynical farces.
There will be a reception immediately following the show
with the director and cast. All ticket sales directly
benefit OutFront Minnesota.
Tickets are going fast--order yours today!
Tickets are available at a sliding scale fee ($15-75) by
