In the Absence of a Marriage
Certificate
With public debate focused on whether same-sex couples
should be able to marry or access other forms of legal
recognition, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that
same-sex couples have some very important opportunities
to address critical needs they may face. From wills, to
powers of attorney, to health care directives and more,
there are arrangements GLBT couples AND individuals
should consider making, potentially after consultation
with an attorney. OutFront Minnesota's
website explains many options.
We Must
Continue to be Heard
Our opposition in the battle for fairness for
Minnesota's GLBT citizens held a rally yesterday at the
state Capitol. They continue to put
pressure on our state's legislators to place a
constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage and
civil unions on the ballot in 2006. We need to contact
our legislators, as well, to remind them that no issue
of minority rights should ever be decided by a majority
vote.
Find your legislator's contact information here.
Inside OutFront:
Reflections from Lobby Day
...an
insider's view of justFair Lobby Day 2005...
The almost-five-year-old grandson of Darlene and Tom
White had the time of his life at justFair Lobby Day.
Morgan and his grandpa Tom made a sign that he proudly
carried all over the lawn of the Capitol, into the State
Office Building, and even into the port-a-potty! It was
decorated with his artwork and said, "Morgan's Birthday
- April 13th. He loves his two moms. Please protect
them." Most folks engaged him with big smiles and
congratulations both on his BIG DAY and his TWO MOMS!
Did he understand why he was attending his second
OutFront Minnesota Lobby Day? A few sentences from his
grandma that some people who make our laws don't want to
see how special his family is brought this response:
"I'm going to tell them it's not nice to hurt people's
feelings!"
