The Anti-Marriage
Amendment Passes the Minnesota House
On
Thursday, March 31, the Minnesota House voted 77-56 in
favor of the constitutional amendment to prohibit
marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships for
same-sex couples. The amendment passed with 64
Republicans and 13 Democrats voting in favor of the bill
and 56 Democrats and 3 Republicans voting in opposition.

Speak Out: Last call
for justFair Lobby Day
Join us next Thursday, April 7, for
justFair Lobby Day! It's critical that we show
up in force and let our Representatives know how we feel
about their vote -- and to ensure that our Senators
don't follow the same path.
Over 1,000 fair-minded Minnesotans are currently
registered to meet with their legislators. And thousands
more will join us at 1 pm for our Rally for Fairness.
Please be one of them and register today! Appointment
times will be emailed on April 5th, to everyone that has
registered before that date. For more information on
the general schedule of the day, visit our
website.
And while many people are already taking the day off of
work and coming to the Capitol, we still need
representation from many parts of Minnesota with
legislators that just voted for this amendment. Look at
our
map to see if you live -- or if someone you love
lives -- in one of the green-shaded areas.
Just can't make it to justFair Lobby Day?
Contact your Representative If your
Representative voted no, thank him or her for taking a
stand against writing discrimination into our state's
Constitution. If your Representative voted "Yes" to the
anti-marriage amendment, let her or him know that you
are disappointed in their vote because the amendment
promotes discrimination and, if passed, would enshrine
second-class status for some Minnesotans in our State
Constitution.

"The Laramie Project" by Moises Kaufman, produced by the
University Department of Theatre Arts & Dance, examines
how day-to-day life in Laramie, WY changed abruptly when
news broke that a young - and gay - college student,
Matthew Shepard, was beaten and left to die tied to a
rural fence post. The play uses the actual words of
Laramie community members, collected from over 200
interviews, as they react to this chilling tragedy.
Following the production, Bonnie Schock, the director of
the show, will facilitate an informal discussion of the
issues raised. This is the only night of the show’s run
that the director will be leading this discussion! This
is a great opportunity to meet other people concerned
about GLBT equality in Minnesota’s workplaces.

Inside OutFront
...an
insider's view of the day-to-day work of OutFront
Minnesota...
“I
said no, but it happened anyway.” “I was told not to say
anything.” “I was too young to know how to stop the
person hurting me.” OutFront Minnesota staff have heard
responses like these from people who have called about a
sexual assault.
You probably know someone who has been sexual assaulted.
Studies show that in the US, one in four girls and one
in six boys experience sexual violence before the age of
18, and a sexual assault happens every 1.8 minutes.
Sexual violence has no class, age, race, sexual
orientation or gender bounds. While history proves that
rape and other forms of sexual violence are often used
against GLBT community members, we must remember that
sexual violence also occurs between community members.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Across the
nation, teal ribbons are worn in April to show support
for the victims and for the work being done to eliminate
sexual violence. At this year’s
justFair Lobby Day, OutFront Minnesota’s
Anti-violence program will be handing out teal ribbons
to remind our GLBT and allied communities that we must
work to break the silence about something that hurts so
many.
If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual
violence, please call the OutFront Minnesota Hotline at
612-822-0127 ext. 101. The Hotline can connect you with
a trained advocate to answer questions, offer resources,
and provide any support that may be needed.
