Political Update

It’s been a busy week at the Capitol. Here’s a breakdown of how the constitutional amendment battle played out this week:

MONDAY:
• Sen. Michele Bachmann and Sen. Sean Nienow try TWICE to circumvent legislative rules and pull the amendment for a floor vote. Their antics eat up some three hours of legislative time in an already shortened session. They are defeated in both attempts.
• Minnesota for Marriage (a pro-Amendment group) unveils a half-page ad in the Star Tribune equating their conservative agenda to the plight of the Iraqi people and crying out for protection against “judicial tyrants.”
• Columnist Katherine Kersten writes her fear that anti-marriage activists “may be forced to retreat from their practices.”
• At the Capitol, OutFront Minnesota volunteers deliver over 11,000 postcards opposing the amendment to legislators from their constituents.

TUESDAY:
• Outside the Capitol, anti-marriage activists rally to promote their narrow agenda to the public. Pastor Wes Wheatley tells the crowd same-sex marriage “opens the door to untold destructive evils” and equates it to pedophilia asking, “what about pedophile behavior? What's next? Will we have to rally again?” Photos from their rally are available online

TODAY:
• As the tides are changing for the better across the nation, the New Hampshire Republican-controlled legislature voted 207-125 in a supermajority to DEFEAT a proposal to amend their state constitution. The victory was the result of legislators hearing from thousands of citizens who spoke out against the amendment.

TOMORROW:
• People of Faith Rally at the Capitol Rotunda from 8am – 9am to show their opposition to the Minnesota anti-marriage constitutional amendment. Join hundreds of people from various faith traditions as we stand unified against the diversionary tactics of a small group of conservatives. For more information please visit us online.

Volunteering at OutFront Minnesota
OutFront Minnesota wants YOU to Volunteer!

OutFront Minnesota’s GLBT Lobby Day at the State Capitol is Thursday, April 27th. A lot of hard work is needed to make the day effective and worthwhile for everyone, and much of that work requires a large team of volunteers helping us out. The reality is that Lobby Day is simply not possible without the commitment and passion of our volunteers. We have a lot of fun, meet literally hundreds of good friends, and it’s just a great experience for everyone who volunteers. We need “roadies” to help us set up and tear down our registration area. We also need “hospitality” people to answer questions, point people in the right direction, etc. We also need Lobby Coaches to bring constituent groups to legislator meetings. In case you’re wondering, we do make sure that you will have the opportunity to attend the rally and meet with your legislator.

Don't forget Lobby Day!
Sign up now to volunteer at OutFront Minnesota's justFair Lobby Day, Thursday April 27th!
