Legislative Update: The Latest on Minnesota’s Anti-Marriage Amendment

On Tuesday, March 8th, Senator Michele Bachmann (R-Stillwater) and Representative Dan Severson (R-Sauk Rapids) held a press conference at the State Capitol to announce their renewed efforts to convince the Minnesota Legislature to pass the anti-marriage amendment. Senator Bachmann’s announcement marks the beginning of this year’s Senate debate about the anti-marriage amendment and provides another opportunity for fair-minded Minnesotans to speak out against the amendment. OutFront Minnesota will be asking for your help often in the next month. Because each one of us knows that the GLBT rights movement will face considerable opposition as we move ahead toward equality, there can be no bystanders in this struggle. OutFront Minnesota is honored to work with you in these remarkable times. Here are a few things you can do:

Attend the Civil Law and Elections Committee hearing and vote in Grand Rapids on Friday, March 18.

Can't join us? Contact members of the Civil Law and Elections Committee to let them know how you feel. .

Frequently Asked Questions about the Hearing

Why is this hearing being held in Grand Rapids?

There is quite a bit of speculation out there - for one person’s take on the issue, read Lori Sturdevant’s OpEd piece in the Star Tribune on Sunday, March 6, 2005. OutFront Minnesota’s Executive Director, Ann DeGroot, is quoted.

A Letter from our friends in the Itasca GLBTA Alliance in Grand Rapids

To our GLBTA Friends and Family Outside of Judy Garland Land:

Thank you, thank you, for your support, pride, and willingness to travel north to Grand Rapids for the hearing on March 18th. Our GLBTA community couldn’t do it without you. Although queer folk have been everywhere, always, our group has organized only within the last six years with the support and guidance of OutFront Minnesota. Grand Rapids in Itasca County was known as the most homophobic area in the state not long ago; now, we have a solid group of people ready to welcome you and stand up against the amendment.

Our county also hosts its share of anti-GLBT zealots, so bring your rainbow gear for protection.

See you on the 18th,

Michele Rinne
Itasca GLBTA Alliance
