Same-Sex Marriage and Male/Female Stereotypes:
Unpacking Biblical and Ancient Greek Roots of Discrimination

Many opponents to same-sex marriage rely on Christian scripture. During this justFair Forum, Dr. David Fredrickson, Professor of the New Testament at the Luther Seminary, will examine biblical roots that lead some Christians to conclude that gay marriage is a theological impossibility.

Legislative Update: Constitutional Amendment Hearing Scheduled

The first vote on this year's anti-marriage constitutional amendment has been set for Friday, March 18 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Plan to attend the hearing and stand up against the anti-marriage amendment. Our elected officials need to see fair-minded Minnesotans who will stand up against allowing this divisive measure onto the ballots in November, 2006. They need to hear from people who will explain that it is never acceptable to bring other people's rights to a vote. This past year, voters in thirteen states passed anti-marriage constitutional amendments. Those discriminatory measures have not helped further any policy goals that actually help families. Click here for more information about the hearing.

OUT at the Theater:

Featuring an award-winning score that runs the gamut of jazz rhythm & blues to seamy ballad and soaring contemporary musical theater, Andrew Lippa’s eclectic, gripping score will leave you shaken and stirred. Heralded as a "scorching score" by the Philadelphia Enquirer, this is the most eye-popping, jaw-dropping and heartbreaking soiree of the season.

GLBT Community Representation Sought for Saint Paul Human Rights Commission

The Saint Paul Human Rights Commission is seeking a new member to provide GLBT representation. The Saint Paul Human Rights Commission is an 11-person body appointed by Mayor Randy Kelly and confirmed by the Saint Paul City Council. Members of the Commission must be City of Saint Paul residents. The key role of the Commission is to be the "eyes and ears" for the Saint Paul Department of Human Rights in the respective community that you represent and the entire city as it relates to civil/human rights. The Commission has authority to conduct studies and investigations in such areas as employment, education, housing, public accommodations and public services.

The Commission meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Commission also serves as the Fair Housing Council that meets the same night from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. if needed. There is a $25.00 stipend for each meeting attended. Commission members serve three-year terms unless they are filling an unexpired term. Anyone interested in applying for a position on the Saint Paul Human Rights Commission, or who wants further information, is urged to contact Department Director Tyrone Terrill at tyrone.terrill@ci.stpaul.mn.us, or by phone at (651) 266-8964.

justFair Lobby Day is going to be special this year...

...because YOU volunteered to work with us!

April 7th will be our third straight year of record turnout for our justFair Lobby Day , and we need to have a very large force of volunteers deployed to make sure everyone in attendance has a great experience. Whether you can work for 2 hours or all day, we can put your time and talents to good use. Ours is the largest Lobby Day at the State Capitol, and in one day we are able to make an impact that resonates throughout the hallways, offices and committee rooms of the Capitol. None of this is even remotely possible without the help of our volunteers. From registering attendees to bringing groups of constituents to visit with their legislator, our volunteers make it happen at the Capitol. We will be having a Lobby Day volunteer orientation at the Capitol on a Saturday prior to April 7th. Be a part of our big day, sign up to volunteer!

inside OutFront

…an insider’s view of the day-to-day work of OutFront Minnesota…

Education leading to increased awareness and understanding is one of the primary means of creating a hospitable environment for Minnesota's GLBT citizens and our families, friends and allies. Each year, OutFront Minnesota speaks to thousands of Minnesotans in colleges, high schools, workplaces, churches, synagogues, and more.

Yesterday, two OutFront Minnesota staff members were proud to carry on a longstanding tradition of speaking at the annual Multicultural Forum, a joint venture of the University of St. Thomas and the National Black MBA Association, Twin Cities Chapter. In its 17th year, the Multicultural Forum seeks to advance diversity in the workplace by enhancing awareness and understanding to bring about an inclusive environment. OutFront Minnesota Senior Director Scott Fearing presented "Coming Out of the Corporate Closet" to conference attendees eager to examine myths and stereotypes in the workplace, while OFM Legal and Policy Analyst Phil Duran spoke about the impact of same-sex marriage in the workplace in "Recognition of Same-Sex Couples: Strictly Business."

OutFront Minnesota also had an information table in the Vendor fair where they were able to talk with employees, managers, consultants and others about the GLBT communities. More than 200 copies of OutFront Minnesota’s "Glossary of Terms Related to the GLBT Communities" and OutFront Minnesota’s pocket sized card, "Talking Points on the Anti-Marriage Amendment" cards were distributed.
