Campaign Update:
|
Together Minnesota!
It’s About More than Marriage
The Campaign is Coming to Your Home Town!
OutFront Minnesota takes the Community Action
Trainings on a statewide tour.
Since December, the TogetherMinnesota! Community
Action Trainings have been touring the state
from International Falls to Rochester and from
Moorhead to Marshall. The purpose of the
trainings is to develop the skills of GLBT
activists to create change in their home towns.
Change in the state begins locally. It is the
right and responsibility of every citizen who
cares about GLBT-equality to take action today
to ensure fairness remains in Minnesota.
In the three months since the launch of the
statewide tour, over 500 individuals have signed
the TogetherMinnesota! resolution and over 50
organizations have pledged to turn out their
membership against a proposed amendment. For
more information on our resolution campaign
The formation of the TogetherMinnesota! campaign
was a direct response to create a community-wide
effort to defeat any proposed anti-marriage
legislation by:
1.Defeating a proposed amendment in the
legislature.
2. In the event of a ballot initiative,
winning at the polls.
3. Electing fair-minded legislators to
office.
Visit the
TogetherMinnesota website to see photos of
tour highlights and to register to attend a
Community Action Training in your home town.

Report It!
OutFront Minnesota's
Anti-Violence Program speaks out on mail-related
harassment.
The Anti-Violence Program at OutFront Minnesota has
recently received several reports of mail-related
harassment to GLBT community members including rude
letters, anti-GLBT related newspaper clippings, and
emails that are filled with slurs and/or implied threats
of potential future violence. As the debate about the
marriage amendment and the often related discussion
regarding the GLBT communities in general comes to the
forefront of many people’s consciousness throughout
Minnesota, this type of bias related harassment will
also continue to rise.
While most mail-related harassment does not rise to the
level of prosecutable offenses, it is still important to
take the following steps if you receive harassing or
threatening mail.
-
Report it to OutFront Minnesota. Your reports
then become part of our offenses database as well as
(anonymously) become part of an annual national
report detailing hate and bias crimes against the
GLBT community. You can call us, email us through
our
website or mail us the information. If you
choose, you can make these reports anonymously.
-
Document the activity. If you receive a piece
of mail that does not contain a specific threat of
violence but that you believe is harassing to you,
keep the item or email in a safe place with the date
that you received it. This can be a very helpful
step if you begin to receive multiple items over the
course of a few weeks or months.
-
Report it to local law enforcement. If the
mail that you receive contains a specific threat of
violence towards you or the GLBT community or occurs
from the same source repeatedly, this is a crime!
Report this immediately to the police. You, not the
police, get to make the determination to have the
case classified as a hate crime.
-
Other options. If you feel that you are being
repeatedly harassed by the same person or group, you
also have the right to request a civil Harassment
Restraining Order through your local government
center. An HRO prohibits that person or group from
contacting you for a period of two years and any
violations are deemed criminal activity.
If you have received some type of harassing
communication, we can help. To speak with an advocate
from OutFront Minnesota’s Anti-Violence Program, call
(612) 822-0127, extension 210 or (800) 800-0350,
extension 210.
