OutFront at the Capitol

Since the legislative session started two weeks ago, there has been very little discussion of Minnesota’s anti-marriage amendment at the Capitol. The list of House sponsors of the constitutional amendment continues to grow, while the Senate has not yet introduced a companion bill. You can see the names of the many Representatives who have co-sponsored this discriminatory amendment at www.outfront.org.

We have received quite a few e-mails asking what is going to happen this year and why things are moving more slowly than last year. Legislators behind the anti-marriage amendment hope to use the debate to gain political capital for the 2006 elections, when all Minnesota House and Senate seats, the Governor, Secretary of State, and a US Senator are up for election. This presents a great opportunity for fair-minded Minnesotans who support GLBT equality -- we have nearly two years to change the tenor of Minnesota’s political climate.

This week, OutFront Minnesota needs you to identify the people in your life that you plan to talk to about the amendment and GLBT equality. Make a list of people you will ask to join you at OutFront Minnesota’s justFair Lobby Day on Thursday, April 7! Write down the names of people to whom you will send letters about the amendment and its impact on you and you family. This two-year campaign to promote fairness and equality for GLBT Minnesotans depends on you and the people of your life taking an active role in determining our state’s future.

Learn How to Effectively Talk about GLBT Issues

OFM Effective Educator Training in February

Because of overwhelming response only a few spaces remain in the February 4th and 5th Effective Educator Training. But to address the community response we have added a class on May 6th and 7th to our schedule.

For the February class we are partnering with Fairview Health Systems & the Fairview GLBT Employee Network to offer the class at a south metro location. In May we will partner with our friends at Metropolitan State University and their Lavender Bridge GLBT Student Association. We are very grateful for our partners, for they allow us to make this training available.

The Effective Educator Training has helped people to develop new, or improve existing, skills for educating about GLBT issues. Allies and GLBT community members, workplace managers, faith community leaders, social service providers and others have found the class to be professionally and personally beneficial. The information offered is valuable to anyone and everyone who cares about GLBT people or issues.

A detailed class description, agenda, further schedule information and registration is available online.

OFM Anti-Violence Half-Time Position Opens

OutFront Minnesota has an opportunity for an anti-violence professional to make a difference in the lives of GLBT Minnesotans and their families and friends. We are looking for a candidate who can provide direct services to community members who need advocacy around anti-GLBT crime issues, assaults, or harassment; educate the community and other service providers about these issues; and collaborate with other OutFront Minnesota program staff to coordinate services, implement systems change, and meet individual needs.

Our staff is a team of diverse, creative individuals committed to making Minnesota a place where GLBT citizens have the freedom, power and confidence to make the best choices in their own lives. If you would like to be part of this effort, we encourage you to send your resume and cover letter. Older persons and persons of color are encouraged to apply!

For full details on this exciting opportunity, including how to apply, go to www.outfront.org.
