California Marriages Now Legal - Implications for Minnesota
Minnesota couples
are heading west...
The legalization of
same-sex marriages in California took effect on Monday. In light
of this, Minnesota couples might be considering a trip west to tie the
knot.
These marriages won’t
be legally recognized in Minnesota due to a 1997 state law declaring
same-sex marriages, even if legally performed elsewhere, to be void in
Minnesota. Couples marrying in California also cannot divorce in
Minnesota – that would have to be done in the state where the marriage
was performed.
However – if you are
going to California to tie the knot with your beloved, please let us
know! We want to be able to track the exciting activity around
this historic time and we’d love to hear your stories.
Please contact Monica Meyer at

Pride is Nearly Here
The Twin Cities Pride
Festival is just around the corner – June 28th and 29th
– and we’re
looking forward to seeing everyone there! Be sure to visit our
pride pavilion where we’ll again be the official coffee house of
Pride, with coffee generously provided by Wilde Roast Café.
postcard to your lawmaker, enjoy our yummy cookies and lemonade, and as
always
–
take our Pride Marble Poll!
Volunteer at Pride and get a free t-shirt!
Also this year, we’re
providing a food barrel to take donations of food for the Aliveness
Project. The Aliveness Project is a community center for those living
with HIV/AIDS and their families. Their food shelf program offers
monthly appointments which provide enough food for an individual to
prepare three to four days of meals at home.
Bring a
nonperishable food item to donate.
Suggested food items
include: boxed dry dinners, Raman noodles, rice mixes, instant soup,
pasta, canned tuna, veggies and fruit.
