A rally was held at the state Capitol on Wednesday, April 20, sponsored
by the Minnesota Family Council and Minnesota for Marriage, to support
the proposed constitutional amendment to ban the legal recognition of
same-sex relationships. Rally speakers included Governor Tim Pawlenty,
Tony Perkins from the Family Research Council, and over a dozen
Minnesota legislators, including House Speaker Steve Sviggum and bill
author Senator Michele Bachmann. They continue to put pressure on
vulnerable legislators to bring the amendment to a popular vote in the
2006 general election and cite recent polls and amendments in other
states as evidence that they are on the right side of this issue.
To date, the anti-marriage amendment passed with a 77-56 vote in the
Minnesota House of Representatives. In the Minnesota Senate, the
amendment missed the deadline to be heard in the Judiciary Committee.
However, Senator Michele Bachmann (R-Stillwater) and some of the other
bill proponents have said they will continue to work to bypass the
committee process and have the Senate vote on the amendment. They would
need 41 votes to allow the bill to come to a full Senate vote.
We need to contact our legislators, as well, to remind them that no
issue of minority rights should ever be decided by a majority vote. You
can find your legislative district as well as contact information by
