California Marriages Now Legal – implications for Minnesota

Read about the Minnesota couple who tied the knot in California.

The legalization of same-sex marriages in California took effect on June 16th, 2008.  In light of this, Minnesota couples are heading west to tie the knot.

These marriages won’t be legally recognized in Minnesota due to a 1997 state law declaring same-sex marriages, even if legally performed elsewhere, to be void in Minnesota.  Couples marrying in California also cannot divorce in Minnesota – that would have to be done in the state where the marriage was performed.

However – if you are going to California to tie the knot with your beloved, please let us know! We want to be able to track the exciting activity around this historic time and we’d love to hear your stories.
