St. Paul City Council Election Results

See how your new City Council Member feels about
GLBT human rights.

This summer, OutFront Minnesota surveyed candidates for the St. Paul City Council’s seven seats with respect to their thoughts on GLBT human rights. Most candidates for the City Council responded, and their responses were reported in our online Action Center and circulated in the community. On November 4, 2003, St. Paul voters cast their ballots, electing three new people to join four returning council members. The responses of the city council members are listed below. OutFront Minnesota looks forward to working with the St. Paul City Council on these issues as well as other issues of particular interest to St. Paul’s GLBT community.

Questionnaire:

#1. St. Paul Ordinance 183.041 (the Human Rights Ordinance) specifically bars those contracting with the City from discriminating on numerous bases, e.g., race, religion, and sex, but not sexual orientation. Would you support a proposal to include “sexual orientation” in this list?

#2. In 1991, Minneapolis established a domestic partner registry, by which same and different-sex couples could pay a fee to the City and register as domestic partners. Would you support the creation of a similar mechanism in St. Paul?

#3. St. Paul Ordinance 280.03 criminalizes appearing in public in the dress of the opposite sex. Would you support a proposal to eliminate this specific portion of the ordinance?

#4. In 2002, Minneapolis joined a growing list of cities around the country in approving an “equal benefits ordinance,” which requires certain contractors with the City that provide benefits to employees’ spouses to provide similar benefits to the domestic partners of employees working on the City’s contracts. Would you support the creation of a similar mechanism in St. Paul?
