Dear Friends:
Since I wrote last week about Hurricane Katrina, many of you have
offered to open your homes to those in need, let me know that you made a
donation, and let me know your availability for anything that is needed.
I’ve also been updated on how your own friends, colleagues, and family
members are doing in the gulf-coast region. Thanks to each and every one
of you for your generosity of spirit and heartfelt concern, it is a
hallmark of our community.
I have a couple of updates for you: Through the
National
Association of LGBT Community Centers (of which we are a member), I
have learned that the following GLBT Community Centers in Texas are
providing relief to LGBT people displaced by the Hurricane:
- The Houston
GLBT Community Center is collecting funds for the New Orleans
center and has posted on its website a list of local organizations
providing assistance and information.
- The Resource
Center of Dallas in partnership with AIDS Arms, is helping to
meet the needs of HIV positive individuals through providing food,
hot meals, dental care, referral to local service providers, HIV
testing, mail boxes, voice mail, and housing. To donate to Katrina
Relief in Dallas, visit their website.
- The
Diversity Center and the San Antonio AIDS Foundation are working
directly with the American Red Cross & Kelly USA to find and
identify LGBT people who are currently housed locally to provide
assistance in the form of clothes, medication, and employment. To
help and/or donate to Project Rainbow Hurricane visit their website.
Many of you want to open your homes to assist those displaced by the
Hurricane. Two members of Rainbow Families, Jessica Sundin and Steff
Yorek, want to coordinate GLBT community efforts to host 5 – 10
families. If you are interested in working with them, they can be
contacted at sundi008@umn.edu.
Thanks and we will keep you updated about other efforts to provide
assistance.
